  Assumptions of Gangotri Dham  The temple is believed to have been built by the Nepalese general Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th century, although the precise date is not known. The temple is located at an elevation of 3,100 meters (10,200 feet) above sea level, on the banks of the Bhagirathi River. The river is considered to be the source of the Ganges, one of the holiest rivers in Hinduism. According to Hindu legend, the goddess Ganga descended to earth from the heavens to purify the souls of the dead and to provide salvation to all who bathed in her waters. The temple at Gangotri is considered to be the place where the goddess Ganga first descended to earth, and is therefore considered one of the most sacred places in Hinduism.
